Kidney test
The test is used to check Creatinine, Protein and Specific Gravity in urine samples. The test provides results by visual comparison with a color chart printed on the package (see below).
CreatinineCreatinine is a waste product of the blood passing through the kidneys that is filtered and eliminated in the urine. This waste is a by-product of normal muscle function. The more muscle a person has, the more creatinine they produce. The levels of creatinine in the blood reflect both the amount of muscle a person has and their kidney function. Women tend to have lower creatinine levels than men because on average women have less muscle than men.
ProteinNormally, your urine should contain virtually no protein. If you have protein in your urine, there may be a problem with the filtering ability of your kidneys.
Specific gravityThe kidneys clear out unwanted substances from the body. The concentration of the excreted molecules determines the specific gravity of the urine. Adults generally have a specific gravity of around 1 000 to 1030. Increases in specific gravity, i.e. increased concentration of solutes in the urine, may be associated with kidney failure or reduced blood flow to the kidneys.
How the self-test works
- Open the foil packet and take out the test strip.
- Urinate in a cup/beaker and dip the test strip.
- Read the result after about 1 minute.
